State Fair of WV Wireless Network to Provide Internet to Vendors and Event Participants

[Jun-1-2009]

The State Fair of WV has upgraded its technology environment throughout the Fairgrounds with the recent implementation of a Wireless Mesh Network.  According to Marlene Pierson-Jolliffe, Manager, the State Fair wanted to be confident in a solution that would be effective, but not overly complicated, would provide reliable internet access to vendors and event participants throughout the year, and would be able to meet the current and future needs of a fairgrounds-wide network.  With the selection of Greenbrier Communications to help with providing the turn-key solution, the result has been just that.
The basic principle of the Wireless Mesh Network is to create a “grid” of wireless signals between multiple exterior access points placed throughout the fairgrounds. Once they have been properly positioned and calibrated, these access points not only create exterior “hot spots” of internet signal, but also provide for extension of signal into the buildings on which they are mounted. As a result, the entirety of the WVU Building, Youth Center, Stage, Grandstand, WV Building and the Douglas Annex now have WiFi internet access.
In addition to the convenience provided vendors and event participants, the Wireless Network offers an income generating opportunity for the State Fair and will enable the addition of future network-based technology such as video cameras, digital signage, distributed audio and/or security systems.
